A man in Darwin has attempted to blow up an ATM, in the process nearly killing himself.

Closed circuit television clearly show a man in a dark (possibly blue) cap, with a white shirt pulled up and over his face walking up to an ANZ ATM on the corner of Albatross and Catterhun streets in Winnellie at 3:45 on Wednesday morning.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Karl Day said, “Police attended and located the ATM, it was completely destroyed.

“Detectives reviewed CCTV footage from the location which shows a man attend the location, light an explosive and within seconds the item exploded, knocking the man over backwards.”

The man then fled from the scene.

The hapless thief is described as being a male Caucasian of medium build. He was wearing dark knee-length shorts, a dark T-shirt and dark (possibly blue) hat and thongs. He had pulled a light coloured shirt over his face.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Day said the same man is possibly responsible for a similar attack on an NAB ATM in Winnellie this Christmas eve.

The public are asked to call crime stoppers if they recognise the man or may have witnessed the incident.
