petrolA recent survey of 67,000 people has found six in ten do not support the introduction of the new Federal Government fuel excise. Single income families already squarely in the sights of Family Benefit cuts are sure to be hurt the most.

The big Petrol Switch survey was conducted by the Sunday Mail and its sister media outlets around the nation. Fully 50% of those surveyed reported they were less likely to return the Abbott Government because of the excise.

Other surveys have found the electorate more favourable to the sale of government owned assets to raise revenue. The devil here, however, is in the detail. While the sale of assets may avoid further pain at the pumps it only pushes that pain to some other utility. For any deregulation of a public utility will entail higher prices for that service.

The fuel excise is, at least, the devil you know.
